National First Responders Day takes place on October 28. This day is set in place to celebrate and observe the heroism of the men and women who are the first to show up to help at an emergency. The day is for appreciating police, firefighters, EMTs, paramedics, and other individuals who risk their lives to save others.
There are millions of career and volunteer first responders who report to work ready to to support their communities. The FBI’s Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted database reports that in 2021, 129 officers died in the line of duty. According to Statista data, in the U.S. in 2021, there were 70 deaths among firefighters while on duty.
First responders are the ones prepared at any time of day or night to respond to emergencies. These emergencies can be dangerous situations and many times are potentially life-threatening. National First Responders Day ensures that we do not forget their continued selflessness to others and sacrifices for us the public. On October 28 we honor the men and women who go into action to help others and neutralize emergencies.
First responders are an essential part of the fabric of our communities, and their day-to-day contributions go far beyond their time-on-the-clock. They are involved in stressful situations on a regular basis. The shocking ordeals, the suffering and injury that they encounter can have lasting effects that can contribute to higher levels of stress in their bodies and minds.
